Yamada Nursery

An unforgettable experience!

After the meeting with the mayor, we visited Yamada Nursery in Yosano.

As a psychology student, I love observing the interactions between people and especially, see how children develop through it. The nursery visit was divided in 3 parts.

Firstly, we visited the class where 1 to 2 year olds were. At first sight, many of them looked confused at the sight of 5 very different and extremely excited people. But it was very interesting to see in person, what we learn in psychology as imitation. Children tend to copy what other children and adults do, which helps them explore and learn new things.

At that age, they do understand, but they are more willing to explore things.

After that, we visited the class where 2 to 3 year olds were. The differences with the younger children were evident. They were crowded in the corner looking at us with very explorative eyes. Imitation was evident, but only a couple of children approached us while the others didn’t respond.

We met the third group in the gym of the nursery, who were 4 and 5 years old. I was very impressed of how disciplined they were. They sat quietly on their chairs observing us and listened carefully to their teachers’ instructions.

Out of all the groups of children, they were the most explorative and within a few minutes they welcomed us. Imitation was very strong, as most children looked at each others’ reactions and behaviours and copied them, such as high five and hugs.

We played lots of games and at the end we saw a wonderful play that left us stunned due to the meticulous planning and performances of the children.

It was one of the most memorable experiences I have had because I felt included as part of the community of Yamada nursery. Also, because I feel psychology is my life, it was very important for me to experience and observe what I am being taught in real life through the people of Yosano.
