27/1 - 1st Day in Yosano

After we met our host families at the town hall last night, we all departed for the houses we would be staying. Next time we will see each other is on Monday 29th as we spend the weekends with our host families.

Waking up to such a wonderful snowy view was magical! I got dressed and went downstairs to greet my host parents and have breakfast with them! The food was delicious!

My host mom informed me that we would be driving to the neighbouring town to visit a traditional Japanese house-museum of the 1800s and then go shopping for dinner. Around noon we departed and I must say I was impressed of her driving skills on an incredibly thick layer of ice that covered the roads.

The museum-house was amazing! It was very well maintained. A very kind woman greeted us and gave us our tickets. Before entering the house, we had to take off our shoes and wear a pair of very elegant looking blue slippers. The doors were like those in movies, with wood and paper and traditional hand-painted art hung from the walls. It also included a room used to make sake and ferment rice. Everything was used to suit the needs of the owners. For example, the staircase's side was full of cupboards and drawers for storage and in the living room, transparent material was added on the sliding paper and wooden doors to serve as windows. I was very impressed!

After enjoying some Japanese tea, we took off to the supermarket. The building had 5 floors and we first went on the 5th floor for ice-cream. One wall was full of windows and the view of the sea of Japan and the town was breathtaking.

We then went back down to the first floor to the supermarket, where we bought ingredients to make Sukiyaki for dinner!
